WordPress Multiple Category Selection Widget

Turn your WordPress post categories into a search powerhouse! This plugin gives you the ability to provide your users with a widget full of dropdowns based upon parent categories and their sub-categories.

Multiple subcategories spanning multiple parent categories (though multiple categories inside a single parent cannot be chosen) are chosen and intelligently filter your posts.

NEW: URL Rewrites, visible URL, AND pagination. It is now version 1.0

Sample Application:

Real Estate – set up parent categories such as ‘Bedrooms’, ‘Bathrooms’, ‘Price Range’, etc. Then put sub-categories beneath them.

Create a new post and tick all applicable sub-categories. Users should now be able to search for your post under all those categories!

I have been so waiting for this…when is it coming out??

  2. subpixel says:

    Hi Zak,

I thought this might work something like the tag include/exclude options on simpy.com … Maybe that was expecting a bit too much for a first release! :o )

I also noticed that the eidget it titled “Properties” – it really was designed for a realestate wasn’t it? :o )

Something to note, it doesn’t do anything with further nested subcategories, which means you can’t drill down beyond one level.

  3. Lea says:

Thanks Isaac, have tried it and it works great! :)
How do I add spacing between the multi-categories selection? I tried to do so, but not sure how to and caused an error

  4. Lea says:

Sorry for bombing your comments section, I’ve figured out about the spacing part.

But I was also wondering, how do I style all the drop-down boxes so they can be of equal length?

  5. admin says:

    Thank you Lea, subpixel!

    @subpixel:

Yes, it’s still in very early stages. I’m planning to add more functionality in the coming weeks as need grows for it…

I’ve also changed the title to ‘Categories’ in 0.9.1. Real Estate users should continue using 0.9.

Further nested subcategories are definitely planned but I’ve yet to decide on how to handle them in an intuitive manner.

    @Lea:

If you take a look at the 0.9.1 version’s FAQ I’ve added CSS info for you to include with your theme. This covers spacing and widths!

    Hi,

I was wondering if there is a way of excluding certain parent categories from appearing in the search.

Also, is there a way of maintaining the subcategories but also having an option at the top of a given dropdown which will disregard the category if nothing is selected like a default “please select” but not required to select any.

  8. thanks a lot.good plugin.

This widget is absolutely, positively exactly what I’ve been looking for, for my multi-fandom fanfiction site. It definitely eliminates a lot of the clutter in my side bars, and makes searching for fics a breeze!

Just one question, though: Are there any limitations? I’m speaking in terms of the maximum number of categories displayed in the sidebar dropdowns, as well as the maximum number of posts a search can produce.

    Thanks!!

  10. Dan says:

Hi Zak, great plugin, was looking for a while for something that did this. one question though, how can I exclude specific categories from the search list?
    Thanks, Dan

  11. Hi Zak,
It seems that when clicking page 2 on the result page using multicategory plugin, it wont anymore gives the correct category..
For example in my music site, selecting 4 minutes above in “search by duration” ,then click search.
The 1st page gives the correct results but the 2nd page and succeeding is not anymore correct.
Is this a bug? Thanks for your plugin, it is very helpful to my site. I am planning to donate if these things get sorted out as early.

    Cheers,
    Merz

  12. merz says:

By the way Zack, the correct sequence of categorical results for a 4 minutes category should be:
    http://www.musicforlicense.net/category/search-by-duration/4-minutes-above/

But using the multicategory widget gives wrong results starting page 2. For your info. Thanks.

  13. Craig says:

    Hi Zack,

I have installed and have the multiple category selection working a treat thank you very much! I do however have a couple of categories which I need, but would prefer not to be included in the choices when choosing which categories to show.

Is it possible to hide or remove these two categories so they do not offer a selection?

    Many thanks!
    Craig

  14. amenity says:

    Does it work in 2.7?

  15. Kris says:

I’m not 100% what this plugin is supposed to do. I installed it, and it displayed 4 drop down bars, and each one contained one of the 4 main categories I have, followed by all the subcategories beneath that. Hitting submit would either go back to my home page, or return an error.

In any case, what I need is a way for my users to filter posts by category – so that they can say, for example, that they want to see only those posts that are in both category 8 and category 12.

Can this plugin do that? (assuming I can get it to work right) :)

    Thanks

  16. Frances says:

Is there any way I can exclude certain categories from showing, and is there any way I can show sub categories?

  17. winbinary says:

    great plugin! thanks zack.

example i have 5 parent categories. how to exlcude some of them?

  18. Vivek says:

    hey Zack,

Waiting for updates, hope you will do it ASAP.

  19. Solly says:

    Hi

Was wondering if theres some include code i can use for this widget to appear on a template page rather than in the side bar ?

    <3

  20. babspace says:

I have used this widget in the past and absolutely love it. However the recent update has caused two of my sites to go wonky. Both sites (one is actually using the widget, the other merely has it activated) keep loading the last post, regardless of what link s clicked. Thankfully I still have an older version of the widget.

  21. Would it be possible to extend it so that it displays two pull downs as opposed to one?

  22. Saud says:

how do you access the admin for this widget, i can see any options to exclude specific categories from appearing all together in the widget. Is that possible?

  23. babeburp says:

I have just started using this widget and it absolutely does the job. The question I have is – can I use this plugins on a custom page instead of placing it in the widget sidebar? If yes, how to do it?

  24. Chris M says:

Great plugin, quick question.. how would I use this plugin if I don’t have support for widgets on a website?

    Looking forward to your response..

  25. I was wondering when would this come out with the ability to choose tags?

  26. encino says:

I think it may not work for WordPress 2.7.1. I have a new simple site. Selecting cats and clicking the button work fine, it creates the url with multiple categories in it, but the resulting html page is completely blank “……”

  27. Frances says:

Love the plugin but how would one go about excluding categories?

  28. milestone says:

Got it installed on WP 2.7.1 with default site/?p=123 (non-permalink) configuration.

But it doesn’t work – seems to be expecting a permalink site and so delivers a 404 page like
    site/categories/all

Pity as this seems to be a uniquely useful plugin.

    Any thoughts?

  29. Stacey Roche says:

Hey. I am not able to get this widget to work on my site. Is there any extended documentation on how to get it to work?

    Thanks
    Stacey

  30. gavea says:

    Great plugin. Thanks!

Can this be added to pages also (not just sidebar), and if so what is the code?

  31. Larry Wilcox says:

When I search without selecting any categories I get a 404 error categories/all does not exist.

  32. Dave says:

    Hi !
Your plugin seems promising, however can you tell me what’s the code to include it in my template, because i’m not using any widget…
    Thanks for your help

  33. Mike Byrne says:

Hi, this is a great plugin and is exactly what I have been looking for! I have one question though…is it possible to exclude a category (and its subcategories)???

    Many thanks,
    Mike.

  34. Mike Byrne says:

Forget my last comment…I have figured it out. Very easy really.

Many thanks for such a great plugin! :-)
